Jaltest vs. JPRO: A Feature-by-Feature Breakdown

If you’re curious about which tool provides more value: Jaltest or JPRO, you’ve come to the right place! WholeFleet Diagnostics is a Canadian distributor of both Jaltest and JPRO, and we can give you insight into each software and how they compare.

But first, if you’re looking for a quick answer — Jaltest is the better choice for larger businesses who depend on multiple vehicle types (agricultural machinery, construction equipment.etc) for their operations. If you’re a smaller business that only depends on commercial vehicles, JPRO is a more affordable and valuable choice.

Now, let’s dive into each feature!

Jaltest Diagnostics Overview

Jaltest Diagnostics is a high-level diagnostic tool designed to read fault codes, as well as maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot components within heavy-duty equipment. It’s best known for its wide coverage, customization, and maintenance capabilities with a wide variety of commercial vehicles, agricultural machinery, and industrial equipment covered.

JPRO Diagnostics Overview

JPRO is a diagnostic tool for heavy-duty commercial vehicles, which can help users diagnose faults and repair minor to complex vehicle issues. To help simplify repairwork, the software comes with data-monitoring, bi-directional testing, and safety features. Troubleshooting information is also available to help guide technicians through repairs.

Jaltest vs. JPRO: Feature-by-Feature Breakdown

Vehicle Coverage

Jaltest covers anything from commercial vehicles, trucks, buses, and light commercial vehicles, to agricultural machinery, construction equipment, and marine vessels. It can even cover some passenger vehicles, although it provides the best value when working with more complex vehicle systems.

Here is just a fraction of the brands covered by Jaltest: Volvo, Iveco, Kenworth, Paccar, Hino, Mercedes-Benz, Bobcat, Caterpillar, ASV, Atlas, John Deere, Hitachi, John Deere, Massey Ferguson, Valtra, McCormick, New Holland, Yamaha, Mercury Marine, Volvo Pentra, and much MUCH more.

JPRO specializes in commercial vehicle diagnostics, and can reliably diagnose components within many class 3-8 commercial vehicles. It can support some types of construction and off-highway equipment, but coverage is extremely limited (especially compared to Jaltest). It also does not support any form of agricultural machinery or marine vessels.

Ease of Use

JPRO’s interface is simple and very user-friendly. It uses a very basic design and layout which makes it easy to navigate through each feature. It’s well-suited for less tech-savvy mechanics, as the interface features an “old-school” style.

While Jaltest isn’t known for being difficult, it is objectively not as easy to use as JPRO. It has a generally straightforward layout that’s easy to grasp, but the vast amount of features Jaltest has can make it very overwhelming at the start. Knowing how to get to each feature can be challenging initially. The more you use Jaltest, the easier it is to utilize its full features and capabilities.

Software and Updates

Both Jaltest and JPRO have free updates 3-4 times per year that introduce revolutionary features and coverage. Each update introduces new functionalities which make it easier to diagnose and troubleshoot vehicles. When it comes to expanding coverage, Jaltest far surpasses JPRO in the number of brands, makes, models, and component information added to the system per update.

You must have an active JPRO subscription in order to receive the regular updates. You must also have an active license to receive regular updates for Jaltest.

Pricing and Licensing

Most Jaltest kits range from $4000-$15000 without tax. A rugged laptop or tablet, as well as any additional cables or extended technical support, will cost extra. You must pay a renewal fee of around $1,500+ per year, depending on which license you use, for the Jaltest software. The cost increases if you need multiple licenses, as each license must be purchased separately. Despite a high-cost, Jaltest is known for a high return on investment.

The price of JPRO ranges widely from $3,000 (for just the software itself) to $9,000 for the full service kits with a rugged laptop included. The annual subscription for JPRO costs $1,699, and renews at full price.

Due to the fast pace of technological advancements, he believes that on-going knowledge and skill development is imperative. With the operational pressures applied to business managers, skills training can be inconvenient, inaccessible and costly. This motivated Kevin to develop the Diesel Engine Technology Fundamentals in-class training curriculum to provide relevant and realistic diesel technology diagnostic training that is on-site, on-time and on-budget.

As a former technical Training Instructor for Cummins Western Canada, Kevin has delivered over 125 Cummins engine certification courses to over 500 heavy-duty technicians. Prior to his time with Cummins, he worked as a journeyman 310S automotive technician and then spent 3 years as a technical lead for Westport Innovations, a world leader in natural gas fuel system development. Kevin’s experience as a service technician, combined with his knowledge of fuel, emissions and engine controls acquired at Westport, helped him excel as a Cummins trainer and in diesel engine fault troubleshooting.

In addition to delivering on-site diesel engine diagnostic training to fleets nation-wide, Kevin also provides on-going remote troubleshooting and technical support to his clients.
