Can Jaltest Program the Air Processing Unit (APU)

As we continue to see demands for enhanced fuel efficiency and lower environmental impact in heavy-duty vehicles, it’s important that fleet managers across Canada know how to program and fine-tune the air processing unit (APU). If you’re a Jaltest user, you may be wondering if the tool will enable you to program the APU. This article will demonstrate the benefits of APU programming and whether you can program the APU from the Jaltest software.

What is the Air Processing Unit?

The Air Processing Unit (APU) is a critical component within modern vehicles, particularly in heavy-duty applications where optimal air management is essential for performance and efficiency. The air processing is key to emission reduction and compliance with provincial guidelines.

The APU regulates and processes air intake through components like pressure regulators, air dryers, and filters. Each of these components play a role in regulating air pressure, removing any moisture, and filtering air contaminants. The APU ensures that the engine receives the correct mix of air and fuel for combustion.

Over the years, the APU has become increasingly sophisticated. There are programmable settings that can fine-tune the air flow characteristics to match specific operational demands and improve various aspects of vehicle performance. Let’s dive into some of these.

Taking Control of Your APU: Key Benefits of Programming

  • Improved Fuel Efficiency

  • Enhanced Engine Performance

  • Reduced Emissions

  • Cost-Savings on Repairs

  • Improved Driver Safety

  • Reduced Noise Levels

Can Jaltest Program the Air Processing Unit? (APU)

Yes, Jaltest is capable of programming the air processing unit, air dryers, and compressed air management systems in a wide number of commercial vehicles. Most Jaltest licenses come with KNORR-BREMSE dealer software which enables APU programming and calibration. These settings can also be accessed in Jaltest’s expert mode.

Please note that programming functions are limited based on the make and model. Jaltest is constantly updating its software and vehicle coverage, but early on, some functionalities can be limited if Jaltest lacks sufficient vehicle data. If APU programming is not available for your heavy-duty vehicle, Jaltest updates three times a year with enhanced coverage and new functionalities.

Kevin Vieth

Kevin Vieth founded VieTech Training & Consulting Inc. in 2016 out of a passion for empowering heavy-duty and automotive service technicians through technical training. Due to the fast pace of technological advancements, he believes that on-going knowledge and skill development is imperative. With the operational pressures applied to business managers, skills training can be inconvenient, inaccessible and costly. This motivated Kevin to develop the Diesel Engine Technology Fundamentals in-class training curriculum to provide relevant and realistic diesel technology diagnostic training that is on-site, on-time and on-budget.

As a former technical Training Instructor for Cummins Western Canada, Kevin has delivered over 125 Cummins engine certification courses to over 500 heavy-duty technicians. Prior to his time with Cummins, he worked as a journeyman 310S automotive technician and then spent 3 years as a technical lead for Westport Innovations, a world leader in natural gas fuel system development. Kevin’s experience as a service technician, combined with his knowledge of fuel, emissions and engine controls acquired at Westport, helped him excel as a Cummins trainer and in diesel engine fault troubleshooting.

In addition to delivering on-site diesel engine diagnostic training to fleets nation-wide, Kevin also provides on-going remote troubleshooting and technical support to his clients.
